Writing in context
I write in different ways for different media.
The current artistic venture is that my play about the wild life of painter Francis Bacon – which has already been performed locally in Colchester and Wivenhoe, is taking a new form at The Minories Art Gallery in Colchester. This is an entirely new collaboration between playwright and art gallery with which we hope to electrify art lovers and curious audiences alike. Come to Minories on Monday 16 or Tuesday 17 December 2019, to see for yourself! See art on the walls and artists on the stage.
My first book was “Naturebirth”. This was translated into eight different languages including Dutch and Japanese.
(Heinmann hardback UK, Penguin paperback UK, RandomHouse USA)
After that I wrote a book with Corin Redgrave’s wife Deirdre about their celebrated theatrical family, titled “To Be a Redgrave”, also published in paperback and hardback in the UK and the USA.
There was also a book called “Quest for Healing” to go with an international film series made for the Discovery Channel.
As a journalist I have written for most of the daily papers and for the past 15 years was senior feature writer for the Mail on Sunday, both for the newspaper and for its supplement “You Magazine”. I now write special features projects for them and others as a freelance.
I have made or contributed to several documentaries:
One on rock music “Living with the Grateful Dead”
and another on alternative medicine “Quest for Healing” made in Peru and shown on the Discovery Channel.
I have conducted numerous interviews as a journalist. Some of these warrant being noted separately on account of the profile of people I spoke with or the particular circumstances or subject matter.
